Day 10 - Somewhere along the Clearwater about 33 miles shy of the top of Lolo pass to the city of Lolo on the otherside!
What goes up must come down! We began Day 10 with a gradual incline that stretched for about 28 miles. After the first 20 miles of climbing, we enjoyed a hearty breakfast at Lochsa Lodge before continuing up to Lolo Pass. This was our first encounter with an elevation over 5,000 feet above sea level! We're now entering the Rockies region. Our 66-mile ride was essentially 33 miles up and 33 miles down, totaling 2,700 feet of ascent. The temperatures were pleasant, with a sligh

Day 9 - Kamiah, Idaho to the Middle of nowhere on our way to Lolo Pass and the town of Lolo beyond!
Today was focused on the Clearwater River. We began our journey on the Clearwater and ended with a cold plunge in the same river as we gently ascended 67 miles through a picturesque gorge adorned with pine trees and numerous small tributaries. There was some headwind with a steady climb of about 2,400 ft. It was a warm day, and the views were spectacular! Tomorrow will be a bit more challenging as we tackle the pass about 33 miles into the ride. It's all downhill from there t

Day 8 Clarkston, Washington to Kamiah, Idaho
We encountered our first day with a vertical mile of climbing. We traveled 67 miles in total, with approximately 5,300 feet of ascent, and nearly all the climbing occurred in the first 36 miles. The temperature was in the mid-80s with full sun throughout the day. We truly earned our miles today! Kevin worked diligently following us, ensuring the team stayed rehydrated and refueled, as today's ride was quite remote. The remoteness brought some gravel into play. We rode at leas

Day 7 Waitsburg, WA to Clarkston, WA
It was a successful day. First, the statistics: 77 miles covered, 3,000 feet of ascent, with 15 mph headwinds throughout, and temperatures in the 80s with an even higher real-feel. The sun was out all day—no trees in this area, just fields of wheat, canola, and some grazing lands. We definitely earned those miles! It felt great to finish at the border of Washington and Idaho. We're realizing we'll need Kevin's help more often for refueling. We ended up with a 37-mile gradual

Day 6 - Port Kelly to Waitsburg, Washington
Today was challenging, and we fell slightly short of our mileage goal, but we ended the day at a small brewery in the countryside, so not all was lost! We faced 12 mph headwinds with gusts up to 17 mph, a steady uphill climb all day, and dry air in the mid-80s by the afternoon when we decided to stop. We passed through endless wheat and canola fields, which were both beautiful and barren. We covered 50 miles with about 2,200 feet of ascent. In our first 6 days, we've complete

Day 5 - Roosevelt, Washington to Port Kelly, Washington
Fastest ride so far. Climbs were gentle. 77 miles at 15.1 mph and about 1,500 ft of ascent. Temperatures keep climbing day over day and we’re dealing with a little headwind. Today we say goodbye to the Columbia River. We were off the bikes by 2:30 and racked them to go to a local Trek dealership. This turned into a 2 plus hour repair session on Jim’s bike and some minor tweaks on Glenn and Vic’s bikes. Great experience with these guys! Walla walla for the night. Day6 is com

Day 4 - Hood River, Oregon to Roosevelt, Washington
Today was dry and warmed up to the upper 70s by the afternoon. We covered a solid 78 miles with 3,500 feet of climbing, with two of the biggest climbs occurring early in the ride and the third just after lunch. It was our first 1,000-foot climb, and we anticipate many more. We also enjoyed a nice tailwind, which is always welcome! As we moved further east along the Columbia Gorge, the scenery changed. From Hood River to The Dalles, we saw more beautiful pine trees and open pr

Day 3 - Troutdale to Hood River
Some days will be better than others. Today featured a 50-mile journey with approximately 3,500 feet of ascent, initially planned as an 80-mile ride! The weather improved significantly compared to our first two days, and the views through the Columbia Gorge were stunning and the pine trees were so damned fragrant! However, a landslide, a bridge detour, a fallen tree, a bike seemingly losing a rear hub gear, a sore elbow, and a 13% grade climb for over a mile all took a toll o

Day 2 - Ranier to Troutdale
Today was a mixed bag for the Puppy Ride team. We began the morning with approximately 40 miles of intense highway travel under a cold rain. This led us to a fantastic lunch venue—a 1905 theater and eatery initially constructed by National Cash Register as their World's Fair pavilion in a suburb of Portland, Oregon. The rest of the day's ride involved bike trails and dry weather as we traveled through Portland. Almost a perfect afternoon if it wasn't for a major tire blowout

Day 1 is in the books!
The day began at the Pacific Ocean's edge in Seaside, Oregon, and concluded in Ranier, Oregon, covering approximately 76.5 miles with a total ascent of 4,000 feet. From around mile 5 to the journey's end, we encountered the Pacific Northwest's signature cold rain and easterly winds. It was a chilly and wet day! We took several coffee breaks and had an extended lunch to warm up midday. We met numerous wonderful people today who were very interested in the Seeing Eye and our mi

SeaTac to Seaside
After successfully landing in Seattle, collecting the SAG vehicle and reassembling the bikes, the boys headed on over to Fremont Brewing for a final farewell with Kyle and some new friends. Two thumbs up to Fremont Brewing for representing our Italian friends with the Gabagool pilsner. Last night they drove to Seaside, OR where the journey will officially begin! We are all looking forward to their next post - I know I am!!

Travel Day!
We're just under two days away from kicking things off in Northern Oregon. Glenn and Victor caught an early morning Delta flight, while Kevin and I took a later one, all heading to Seattle. In the next 48 hours, we've got to pick up my truck, which was shipped ahead of us to a friend in Seattle, hit up a fundraiser/send-off with Kyle from The Seeing Eye at Fremont Brewing in Seattle, do a bunch of organizing, and then drive from Seattle down to Seaside, Oregon, where we'll st

T minus 2 days
It was a wonderful turn out tonight for the Puppy Ride send off at the People's Pub in Bayport. Lots of friends and family came to show their love and support. Victor, Jim and Kevin shared some words of gratitude and appreciation and Kyle, a gift officer and graduate of The Seeing Eye did the same. The cherry on top was meeting Kyle’s guide dog, Bailey! Our athletes are all looking forward to their adventure and the rest of us, well, we’re saying a few extra prayers to ensure

We are two weeks away...
Puppy Ride Long Island will embark on a nearly two-month journey from Oregon to New York in less than two weeks. The athletes have been riding their asses off (literally) and getting all of their gear ready for the big trip. Jim, our "Course Plotter" has mapped the route, Glenn "The Senior Statesman" has thought of all the contingency plans and Victor, the "Chief Content Officer" is getting the drone ready for action. Visit our blog often to hear how the crew is doing and fol
