Day 54 The ride to the ferry that brought us to Long Island

We started our day with our very accustomed 5am alarms. Today seemed a bit different - no usual jokes about getting up early - not much talking - no “maybe we should take the day off and postpone the ride until the team is better rested”! (As said by Victor every morning since day 2 roughly quoting a famous Bill Murray line in Stripes from the 1980s)

We got packed up and out on the trail fairly early, We rode about 14 miles on the remainder of a rail trail trail that we spent part of the day before riding from Poughkeepsie - Maybrook Trail, then on to roads for the remainder of our 48 mile ride to catch the ferry home. The roads were ok for the most part but as past experience dictated, Bridgeport area is traffic-y and doesn’t have much shoulders or infrastructure for biking!

We were cautious and pretty quiet. I think all three of us wanted to get the day done, to make sure we finished safely, and to process the fact that we would be home for the first time in almost two months.

We ate some snacks from the road side with Kevin’s support and knocked out the miles before noon! We caught the 11:45 ferry and got home early afternoon.

Now we have a Saturday rest day and one more bike ride with friends on Sunday to take our bikes across Long Island from where the Port Jeff ferry lands on the island’s north shore to the south shore and where we can dip our front tires in the Atlantic Ocean! Our rear tires having been dipped in the Pacific Ocean on Day 1, we will now dip our front tires in the Atlantic completing our monumental tour of the upper US states for Coast to Coast!

Looking at the current fundraising totals, puppy Ride Long Island is at about $96,000 so far this year in big part to you all who are reading my blog! Wow! This is tremendous and will do so much good for those who benefit from man’s best friend, the hard working guide dogs at The Seeing Eye!!!
